Pens are used in every periphery of life, from the most mundane tasks like writing a grocery list to real historic events like signing of an important piece of legislation. The demand for writing instruments are going down due to digitalization but still the demand for luxurious pen sales are going up due to different reasons. In Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, there is still a sustainable demand for pens due to the rise in population and in America and Europe, these pens are extensively used as a gift item and also now a days, have become a social prestige symbol and an important fashion accessory similar to a high brand watch. A lot of creativity and innovation has been introduced in pens like ballpoint, porous and gel pens.

The prices of pens are judged on the basis of their girth, balance, and quality of material, workmanship and the reputation of the manufacturer. The classic designs and the history that lies behind the design element also make up for the price.  Technical innovations are one of the driving forces behind the writing instruments with companies fighting for new technologies to create new writing systems like ball point, roller pen etc. New filling mechanisms like lever, piston, cartridge, and eye-dropper are also used in a different way. Novel chemical formulas and ideas like ink thickness, flow, and drying time too count for price variations.

Pen is often seen as an aesthetic accessory, a status symbol or a collector’s item. Some argue that these luxurious pens are over-priced. Well! All these things depend on what you want to get out of your fountain pen and what are the qualities that matter to you. If one has limited money that could be spent only on one or two pens then he should not go for high-end pen. If one opts to have a limited edition pen that has been produced due to some historic reason, it will definitely cost high.

Although, the luxurious pens use the latest technology which is very user-friendly and innovative, it is somehow some historic or rare reason associated with it to make it a rare collection.
