A pen is an instrument which is used to
write or draw something on a surface like paper by applying ink. Previously
reed pens, quill pens and dip pens used to be used. With reed pens, quill pens
and dip pens used to be used in the past. With ruling pens, the width of the
line can be adjusted. Technical pens like radiograph are commonly used pens.
Now in this modern age mainly ball pens, rollerball pens, ceramic tip pens and
fountain pens are used. These pens come in different models which are stylish
and innovative. Examples of such stylish pens are as followed:-
- Ballpoint Pen:-In this kind of pens, oil-based ink is dispensed when a small hard sphere is rolled. This hard sphere is usually made of steel, brass or tungsten carbide and they are measured usually within 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm. in this case, as soon as the ink comes into contact with the paper it gets dried. These stylish ball pens are reliable and come with both the options-expensive and inexpensive depending in the style and quality. In everyday life, fountain pens have been replaced by the ballpoint pens.
- Rollerball Pen:-Its function is almost same as that of the ballpoint pen- a water based ink or gel ink is dispensed through a ball tip here as well. Only here the ink is less-viscous and because of that paper absorbs this ink faster. Also this pen smoothly moves on any writing surface. This stylish pen in India was mainly designed to fulfill both the function of ballpoint pen and fountain pen- the convenience of the first one and the effect of wet ink of the latter. The stylish and modern rollerball pens come with gel ink of several colors which include metallic paint colors, transparent ink, invisible ink and ink with the effect of glow-in-the-dark.
- Fountain Pen:-Through a nib, fountain pen delivers ink which is water-based. First the ink is flowed from a reservoir to the nib via a feed and thereafter through the nib the ink is flowed due to capillary action and gravity. The nib consists of movable parts the ink is delivered on the surface through a thin slit by the moving parts. The reservoir of the fountain pen can be refilled and disposed. The reservoir can be refilled in different ways- piston, through the nib from a bottle of ink, with an eyedropper.
- Felt-tip pen or marker:-The tip of this pen is made of fibrous material. These pens with the which are smallest and finest are used to write on only paper. For the children who use felt-tip pen for drawing or colouring, there are medium-tipped felt-tip pens. Those felt-tip pens which are used to write larger size and on surfaces like whiteboards, chalkboards and corrugated boxes are known as markers. Those pens which are used to highlight certain portions of already printed texts are called highlighters. Here, the tips are wider and ink is brighter and transparent. Non-permanent ink used in those pens which are designed for temporary writing and pens used to on packages use permanent markers.
- Gel Pen:-The ink which is used in this pen is water-based and it suspends the pigment. The ink is thick and opaque and therefore it can be clearly seen on dark surface.
